Week 7. narration

My persuasive argument thesis is: To prevent some disasters, Information must be regulated in the internet.

1. What do people already know about my topic?
-Everyone knows that people today are linked closely with the internet.
-Most of the internet users are experiencing inconvenience when surfing and using the internet.
Besides, most of the internet users usually face with the information in undesirable way ( that influences in a bad way or give a false information.
-Many people are aware of the  existence of 'Internet censorship', which is regulating the information on the internet.

2. What research has already been done about my topic?
Perceptions of Internet information credibility
-professional-quality Web sites are easy to create and can appear credible, even when they are not

Narration

According to the web-site internet live stats, it can be seen that the number of the internet users has increased tenfold from 1999 to 2014. Most of these internet users may use the internet for finding information. It obviously seems that the information on the internet can give people a big effect. However, perceptions that considering and doubting internet information that it may not be useful all the time has been coming out from the past. The research from Flanagin and Miriam tried to compare internet information to other traditional media and also tried to found out what information was the most credible thing on the internet through several surveys and experiments. It showed that unlike most other mass media, the Web has few centralized information filters relative to the amount of information available . Although sites that parallel their traditional media counterparts, such as the New York Times Online , do have formal information gatekeepers, the most of the web sites do not. Also, web-based information also differs from information delivered through more traditional channels in the point that it is more prone to alteration, which can be difficult to detect. Web-based information, however, is easy to create and can appear credible, even when they are not. It seems that internet users could meet an bad result by inaccurate information that is easy to believe credible.

Also, as the undesirable contents are increasing, Anna Larkina, Senior Web Content Analyst at Kaspersky Lab indicates the problem and point out that solution is urgent.

“Besides unwanted content, the Internet brings with it other dangers no less damaging for children, for example cyber-bullying or cyber-trolling. Aggressors can exploit all possible channels of online interaction – including social networks, forums, chats and messengers – which when used together can cause victims untold mental suffering. Technically, the fight against cyber-trolling is not so simple, so Parental Control is not so effective against it. As a rule children are not able to cope with aggressors on their own; therefore, parents have an important role to play in the protection of children from cyber-bullying. Ideally, parents need to pay attention to their children’s Internet activity.”

In Singapore, already the internet regulation is applied. Singapore has the most highest internet penetration and even Singapore government promotes the internet for national development. For promoting a better environment of the internet, Singapore Broadcasting Authority(SBA) is responsible for the online censorship. SBA judged that internet has negative effects  and according to the Minister of information, they are trying to keep Singapore's "backyard and front yard clean by sweeping daily." The SBA regulates Internet Service/Content Providers through the Class License Scheme and the Internet Code of Practice(prohibiting the materials under the set of limitations).

Week 6. Intro

1. The introduction, which warms up the audience, establishes goodwill and rapport with the readers, and announces the general theme or thesis of the argument.

According to the paper from Michael Lesk, it shows the tremendous number of 12,000 petabytes. This is the number of the information on the internet in the world. Besides, around 40% of the world population has an internet connection today and most of the purpose for the internet was to search various kinds of information. As there are so much information exposed to people in the internet and it is available in everywhere in the world, it seems that people are relying on the information on the internet. But, there are some questions. How are you using those information? Are you using the information in a desirable way? Think about it. You must have some difficulties to use information in the internet and even be influenced in a bad way. To prevent some disasters, Information must be regulated in the internet.

  1. Attracts the audience - I displayed the paper from a professional that shows how much information has the internet with a tremendous number ,let people know how many people are using internet in nowadays, and show the major purpose of internet use. By displaying these facts, I could show that so many internet users in the world contact with so much information.
  2. Explains the topic. - By asking the question of 'are people using information well', I emphasized the necessity of discussion of the topic.
  3. Declares the thesis of your argument. - I wrote the direct argument , explaining the purpose of the discussion : " To prevent some disasters, Information must be regulated in the internet. "

Week 3. Classical Argument Outline

1. The introduction, which warms up the audience, establishes goodwill and rapport with the readers, and announces the general theme or thesis of the argument.
I will start by describing how much information exist on the online and how much modern people are exposed on those information. (Emphasizing) And then I will cast a question as an attention grabber like: 'How are you using those information?' or 'Are you using the information in a desirable way?' Then, I'll end my introduction with "Information must be regulated in the internet"

2. The narration, which summarizes relevant background material, provides any information the audience needs to know about the environment and circumstances that produce the argument, and set up the stakes-what’s at risk in this question. In academic writing, this often takes the form of a literature review.
I'll display some statistics I've searched that show how much people use internet as a method of searching information and this will help on emphasizing how the information on internet has became important. I'll also show the statistic that show how people are unsatisfied and suffer damage when watching some kind of information in Internet. This statistic can explain why this argument has came out by emphasizing the bed effects of Information in Internet.

3. The confirmation, which lays out in a logical order (usually strongest to weakest or most obvious to most subtle) the claims that support the thesis, providing evidence for each claim.
I will display three claims that will support my thesis
 1. Too much information  (source : http://www.economist.com/node/18895468 )
Using the example of Google "information overload"  that everybody would once suffer from it, I'll   make people remind of the experience of "information overload". I'll also mention the bad effects of 'information overload', stating three reasons of people feeling anxious, being reduce creativity, and  being less productive. Then, I'll shift the attention when regulation is applied and show the advantage. In this case, the regulation will be using technology : smart filters (information sanity).

 2. Damage of spread of false information (source : http://www.theguardian.com/media/greenslade/2013/mar/06/leveson-report-internet)

There are some people who are damaged by the spread of false personal information. Through stating those examples, I'll emphasize the importance of the regulation. And I'll explain it should stongly regulated by the government to prevent the disasters.3

3. Violent information (source : http://people.hamilton.edu/bhouse/DoWeEncourage/DoWeEncourage3.html)

I'll show the examples of the people who met a bad result by violent information in Internet and the statistics of how much violent information is prevail in Internet. It will help on emphasizing the importance of the regulation.

4. The refutation and concession, which looks at opposing viewpoints to the writer’s claims, anticipating objections from the audience, and allowing as much of the opposing viewpoints as possible without weakening the thesis.
I will concede that it is a democratic society that pursues liberty in the society but in such a limited set of conditions that some kinds of regulations are necessary. I will show the example when liberty is only pursued and expect the result, which would be a disaster.

5. The summation, which provides a strong conclusion, amplifying the force of the argument,  and showing the readers that this solution is the best at meeting the circumstances.
I will close with a summary of my previous points, emphasize why the "Information Regulation" is necessary in cyberspace, and have a brief consideration of the positive result when the regulations are applied. I will end with a reaffirmation of my original thesis.

Week3. Articulation

1) My argument

I want to argue that Information regulation should be in our internet society. In today, numerous information is on the Internet and these can lead to bad outcome. I want to emphasize that regulations on information in Internet should exist to prevent some catastrophe.

2) How I found My Argument

While reading 'Havard Sampler', i could remind our society full of information. It can be an advantage that people can find many sources they want, but I could recall the inconvenience of excessive information. I started to find some sources to specify my argument, realized the seriousness of information in Internet(by the source : After Leveson: the internet needs regulation to halt 'information terrorism', internet terror?!?! ) . The source made me think about misuse of the information, disaster caused by wrong information. Then, I found  I thought there should be a regulation on information in the case of internet for the citizens and for our society.

3) New research questions

1. What are the pros and cons of information?
2. What results can be induced by excessive information?
3. Does Information Regulation can influence on citizens' safety?
4. Does some kind of information can be harmful on mental?

4) Connections to the Harvard Sampler

Chapter 2 in Havard Sampler talks about the liberty in the cyberspace. Many people insists the 'freedom of expression' and say they should express and collect all the information what they want but I thought these thoughts can lead to bad results. This topic is directly related to the problem of 'Liberty in cyberspace'.

Week 3 objective - Research: After Leveson: the internet needs regulation to halt 'information terrorism'

Source:
After Leveson: the internet needs regulation to halt 'information terrorism'
http://www.theguardian.com/media/greenslade/2013/mar/06/leveson-report-internet

My Topic:
The regulations on the information in Internet are necessary.

What I hope to learn from this source:
I want to find the facts that can support my arguments of this topic and establish credibility by quotation of the expert. The expert also extracted the information of a book, 'After Leveson'

Notes:
  1. Citing "freedom of expression", companies will host their anonymous contributors' bulling, lies, smears, breathtaking invasions of privacy and reputation-destroying carnage while refusing all responsibility for what they host.
  2. Example of information misuse : Someone took one of his colleague's name and set up a Facebook. Some true and some false facts were on the site. Those facts and events seemed to be credible and this played havoc with his personal life and relationships. But Facebook company avoided the responsibility.
  3. Case of Jimmy Savile : much of the reputational damage that has followed the Jimmy Savileallegations falls into that same category of information terrorism, or certainly information assault.
  4. Why? completely unrelated media stories, about completely unrelated people, mainly completely unrelated circumstances, and unrelated crimes – inspired by the pass-the-parcel "it happened to me too" accusation culture, fed by the never-sleeping information machine.
  5.  examples of reputational damage

Final Thoughts:
The examples on this source would be a big evidence of harmful consequences of excessive information on Internet("Information Terrorism", according to the author). Due to the characters of the Internet, some people had to suffer the disaster of reputational damage.
