Research 12/6 HOW MUCH DATA EXISTS ONLINE

Source:

HOW MUCH DATA EXISTS ONLINE

https://andygreenhaw.wordpress.com/tag/how-much-data-exists-online/

My Topic:
The regulations on the information in Internet are necessary.

What I hope to learn from this source:
I had the related resource before but I find out that the source was too old one. I found the recent one to emphasize the how the internet is big and how much information is in the world.

Notes:

1. New data suggests that 1.2 Zettabytes (1.3 trillion gigabytes) is now stored in cyberspace – which amounts to 339 miles of fully-loaded iPads stacked to the sky.
2. The International Data Corporation estimates that by 2020, business transactions on the Internet will reach 450 billion per day.
3.

16 gigabytes : one fully loaded Ipad
 1 terabytes : 62.5 fully loaded Ipads
1 petabytes : 62,500 fully loaded ipads
(placed flat on each other the stack would be twice the height of the Empire state building, and almost as tall as the worlds tallest building )
Burj Dubai - 828m > Ipad(petabyte) - 794m > Taipei - 509m
1.2 Zettabytes : 75 billion fully loaded Ipads

Final Thoughts:
This source would help me emphasize the amount of the size of the information in the internet.

11/16 Research : information overload

source :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_overload

Notes:

-Definition
Information overload occurs when the amount of input to a system exceeds its processing capacity
information overload is experienced as distracting and unmanageable information such as email spamemail notifications, instant messagesTweets and Facebook updates in the context of the work environment.

-general causes of information overload
A rapidly increasing rate of new information being produced
ease of duplication and transmission
Large amounts of historical information to dig through
Contradictions and inaccuracies in available information
A low signal-to-noise ratio
A lack of a method for comparing and processing different kinds of information
The pieces of information are unrelated or do not have any overall structure to reveal their relationships

Final thoughts :
These will be the additional information for 'information overload' in my first argument.

Research: 10/25 Raising awareness about sexual abuse

source :
http://www.nsopw.gov/(S(1htpw3zx51nvwn3dt2dzlh45)X(1))/en/Education/FactsStatistics#technology

Abuse via Technology

  • Approximately 1 in 7 (13%) youth Internet users received unwanted sexual solicitationss
  • 9% of youth Internet users had been exposed to distressing sexual material while online.
Wolak, J., K. Mitchell, and D. Finkelhor, “Online Victimization of Youth: Five Years Later,” National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, 2006. (http://www.missingkids.com/en_US/publications/NC167.pdf) (December 21, 2011)

It  seems that young internet users receive unwanted sexual information (that will influence in a violent way).
  • 1 in 25 youths received an online sexual solicitation in which the solicitor tried to make offline contact.
  • In more than one-quarter (27%) of incidents, solicitors asked youths for sexual photographs of themselves.
  • The most common first encounter of a predator with an Internet-initiated sex crimes victim took place in an online chat room (76%)
internet users are exposed to too much information that will influence them in a bad way or be a victim of a sexual abuse.

Final thoughts :
These statistics will help support my third argument.

Research: 10/24 Violent Behavior

Source:
Violent Behavior
http://people.hamilton.edu/bhouse/DoWeEncourage/DoWeEncourage3.html

My Topic:
The regulations on the information in Internet are necessary.

What I hope to learn from this source:
I want to find the examples that will help support my third argument of my confirmation.

Notes:

  1. It is not only the criminals who access the negative information on the Web, but also children who are growing up in an ever-changing, complex society can now gain access to this information.
  2. 'The Nuremburg Files', the web site which advocates the murder of abortion doctors and lists the names and addresses of the abortion doctors. This information can provoke a reader to action.( the web site was taken to US court because it violated the first amendment)
  3. Muder Masscre at columbine high : On April 20th, 1999, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris walked into their high school and murdered 12 of their classmates, one teacher, and wounded 23, before killing themselves. The students who enjoyed the violent video game Doom and Quake, contacted with the website posting all of the negative information. Harris states 'All I wanted to do is kill and injure as many of you as l can, especially a few people. Like Brooks Brown' Also, he looked up how to make pipe bombs on the internet. Negative behavior turned into violent behavior by the two boys now proves that the Internet is a viable resource to find and act upon negative behavior. Negative behavior turned into violent behavior by the two boys now proves that the Internet is a viable resource to find and act upon negative behavior.
  4. A study done by Time revealed that 75% of people feel that the Internet is to blame for the Columbine massacre.
  5. Because of pop culture, many behaviors are mimicked. Sports and TV figures are becoming role models, and along with that comes a sick wave of violent copying.
  6. Hundreds of schools have been hit with threats and violence before and after the Columbine incident (Time, May 31, 1999, 38). Just recently, a six-year-old child shot one of his classmates with a pistol belonging to his parents. The violence that is ruining families and destroying communities can be caused from an incident that produced positive reinforcement for negative behavior, stemming from the Internet.

Final Thoughts:
This source has several information for supporting that internet influences on people's violent behavior. These examples can be more reasonable in the case of US because these situation hardly happen in Korea. In Korea, sexual violence or school violence is prevailing,so I hope to find those examples.

Research 10/19 : Too much information

Source:
Too much information
http://www.economist.com/node/18895468#footnote2

My topic:
The regulations on the information in Internet are necessary.

What I hope to learn from this source:
I wanted to strengthen my first argument in the confirmation. I'll use the expert opinion, and supplement my reasons and solution.

Notes :
1. Difficulties by Information overload (  A survey by Reuters)
-two-thirds of managers believe that the data deluge has made their jobs less satisfying or hurt their personal relationships
-One-third think that it has damaged their health
- most managers think most of the information they receive is useless

2. Coined phrases to express the phenomenon
“data asphyxiation” (William van Winkle), “data smog” (David Shenk), “information fatigue syndrome” (David Lewis), “cognitive overload” (Eric Schmidt) and “time famine” (Leslie Perlow). Johann Hari, a British journalist, notes that there is a good reason why “wired” means both “connected to the internet” and “high, frantic, unable to concentrate”
3. Clear problems from information overload
the dizzying increase in the volume of information (the amount of data being stored doubles every 18 months)
combination of omnipresence and fragmentation
constantly bombarded with unrelated bits and pieces—a poke from a friend one moment, the latest Greek financial tragedy the next
- thickening at a time when companies are trying to squeeze ever more out of their workers
ex) survey in America by Spherion Staffing discovered that 53% of workers had been compelled to take on extra tasks since the recession started. This dismal trend may well continue—many companies remain reluctant to hire new people even as business picks up

4. Three big problems
  1) anxious and powerless
  2) reduce creativity
  3) workers less productive

5. Solution
 -  technological: rely on the people who created the fog to invent filters that will clean it up
 -  willpower. Ration your intake. Turn off your mobile phone and internet from time to time.
 - teaching "  information superhighway "

Final thought:
This research can help support my overall confirmation. But maybe,  I have to find more persuadable examples that can strengthen my first argument.

Week 3 objective - Research: After Leveson: the internet needs regulation to halt 'information terrorism'

Source:
After Leveson: the internet needs regulation to halt 'information terrorism'
http://www.theguardian.com/media/greenslade/2013/mar/06/leveson-report-internet

My Topic:
The regulations on the information in Internet are necessary.

What I hope to learn from this source:
I want to find the facts that can support my arguments of this topic and establish credibility by quotation of the expert. The expert also extracted the information of a book, 'After Leveson'

Notes:
  1. Citing "freedom of expression", companies will host their anonymous contributors' bulling, lies, smears, breathtaking invasions of privacy and reputation-destroying carnage while refusing all responsibility for what they host.
  2. Example of information misuse : Someone took one of his colleague's name and set up a Facebook. Some true and some false facts were on the site. Those facts and events seemed to be credible and this played havoc with his personal life and relationships. But Facebook company avoided the responsibility.
  3. Case of Jimmy Savile : much of the reputational damage that has followed the Jimmy Savileallegations falls into that same category of information terrorism, or certainly information assault.
  4. Why? completely unrelated media stories, about completely unrelated people, mainly completely unrelated circumstances, and unrelated crimes – inspired by the pass-the-parcel "it happened to me too" accusation culture, fed by the never-sleeping information machine.
  5.  examples of reputational damage

Final Thoughts:
The examples on this source would be a big evidence of harmful consequences of excessive information on Internet("Information Terrorism", according to the author). Due to the characters of the Internet, some people had to suffer the disaster of reputational damage.
